Much of what we know about smoking and vaping is a myth. We’re told that these habits reduce stress, that nicotine is highly addictive and that cigarettes and e-cigarettes are near-impossible to give up. In reality:
- Someone who’s smoked throughout their life will stand an 80% more chance of suffering from severe depression or clinical anxiety in middle to old age than a non-smoker
- The physical addictive aspect of nicotine only constitutes 10-20% of the habit, while 80-90% is in the mind – which is why you can likely sleep, fly and go to the cinema without smoking or vaping
- In the UK, almost 100,000 people report quitting smoking each year
It’s also said that vaping is a safer alternative to smoking – but this isn’t necessarily true, either. Not only is there insufficient research for us to know the exact effects e-cigarettes have on the body and mind, but vapes contain a concoction of harmful substances like heavy metals and carcinogens we inhale directly into our lungs.
My hypnotherapy space is a judgement-free zone. I have loved ones who smoke and vape – my partner even used hypnotherapy to quit smoking 10 years ago now.
